Miss Black Nevada to compete for national crown

Angel Qualls

Angel Qualls was crowned Miss Black Nevada USA last November and will be in Maryland in August to compete in the national Miss Black USA Pageant.

A Chicago native, Qualls came to Las Vegas in search of new opportunities after a lack of money left her unable to complete her education at Howard University. “I entered the Miss Black Nevada USA pageant for an opportunity to go to the National Miss Black USA pageant,” she said, “and have the chance to win the $25,000 scholarship in order to go back to school.”

At 22, Qualls is determined to earn a college degree; she believes that nothing is more important for her future. “Ever since I was a little girl, education has always been very important to me,” she said. “It means more than becoming financially successful. When I reflect on my ancestors, and what they went through to survive with no opportunities for an education, it motivates me to be the best I can — and to learn as much as possible.”

The National Miss Black USA pageant includes contestants from 48 states. They compete in the areas of talent, fitness, evening gowns and personal interviews.

To Qualls, one of the pageant’s best characteristics is the special “red dress” evening gown competition, which is intended to raise awareness about heart disease. “My personal platform, that I have incorporated into a monologue for my national talent competition, is on HIV and AIDS,” she said. “I am very excited about it and I have prepared extensively. It is my passion to someday teach the world about the true impact of HIV and AIDS and break down the negative stigmas.”

Qualls is concerned that many young people continue to ignore the reality of AIDS. “A lot of people of my generation don’t believe that they can get the HIV virus, and consequently they don’t protect themselves,” she said. “It is really important that young people take notice of the risks and be proactive in efforts for good sexual health.”

With returning to college at the top of her list of goals, Qualls considers her time at Howard the most memorable of her life. “I actually loved it for the very short time I was there,” she said. “The Howard University environment is nothing less than supportive. The students were all so intelligent and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Many students there have great ideas and know how to follow through on them. It is just a great place to be.”

In her quest to pursue higher education, Qualls has her eye on the prize of the national pageant. She encourages all who want to assist in her travels to send an e-mail to MissBlackNevada2010@live.com.

“An education opens so many doors — whether it is in the immediate future or later in life,” said Qualls. “Having an education does make life easier, and it does help.”
