Community: Back to School!

With our young people heading back to campus for the 2012-13 school year, I thought it would be interesting to check in with a select few and inquire about their plans for the future. We recently spoke to participants in the Performing and Visual Arts Camp (PVAC) for Kids, hosted each summer at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre. On a recent break from rehearsals (on Aug. 1, 2 and 4, they’ll stage a production of the musical “The Me Nobody Knows”; call 702-507-3989 for additional information), they opened up about their educational goals — casting their responses in the form of personal decrees.

Aalyiah Sheppard: I will be a freshman the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this fall, and my educational decree will be to embrace the college experience and be open to making new friends. I will complete both semesters with a 3.0 GPA or higher. I will reach all goals and beyond. My primary focus is to be a successful student.

Tiffany Hilk: I am 18 years of age, and attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the fall with a major in pre-nursing. While working with PVAC this summer, I have learned that it doesn’t matter who’s the best, but who is doing their best and taking pride in their work. My decree is that I will strive to be the best at what I do, and allow others to do the same.

Avree Walker: I will be a junior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this fall. My decree is to continue to be instrumental in the development of the West Las Vegas Arts Center’s Performance Ensemble. I will mentor and cultivate the next generation of arts ambassadors, and utilize the arts as a vehicle to activate my community’s self-worth.

Jazmun McCoy: My decree for this school year is to be confident and disciplined. I will be a leader, not a follower, by stepping up when an opportunity comes my way. This is my decree.

Jahnae Runnells: I am a 17-year-old senior at Mojave High School. My decree is: "The glass is half full, not half empty." I will accept change, make the best of it and be adaptable.

Shakea Littlejohn: I am 17 years old, and will be attending the College of Southern Nevada as a freshman this fall to study juvenile justice. My decree is that I will work hard in school and help my younger siblings with their homework. I will have excellence without excuse.
