Southwest Gas drives initiatives for diversity, equity, and inclusion

With June comes the recognition and celebration of Juneteenth — and to commemorate the historic day, Southwest Gas is pulling back the curtain on its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. DEI has been infused into every aspect of the company as it commits to data transparency around workforce diversity metrics, evolving the talent pipeline, providing cultural training and continuing education, and investing in the communities it serves through partnerships with nonprofit organizations which serve diverse communities.

Southwest Gas created employee resource groups to support African American, women and multigenerational employees. As part of its commitment, the company has conducted over 13,000 DEI training hours and installed new DEI Council members in 2021.

“As we acknowledge Juneteenth, we are also honoring the amazing stories and work of our ancestors while still remembering that there is still so much work to be done as we progress forward,” says Sharon Braddy-McKoy, chief human resources officer. “At Southwest Gas, we seek to be a catalyst for change. Our goal is to deepen our relationships with diverse partners in the communities where we operate and for our workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We commit to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Southwesters.”

The DEI team focuses on fueling opportunities for all employees, encouraging them to be their true and unique selves. This creates an atmosphere conducive to developing and retaining the best and brightest talent while also attracting new employees of all identities and backgrounds.

“Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion journey began in 2019 and in that time, we’ve continued to invest in DEI,” says Courtney Moore, director of DEI at Southwest Gas. “What I am most proud to share are our DEI Commitments. These focus areas demonstrate our internal and external commitment; leading the creation of a diverse and equitable and inclusive workplace, investing in the communities we serve, building relationships with diverse suppliers and becoming more engaged in important conversations.”

Southwest Gas embraces and cultivates its internal community to fuel opportunities, creating better engagement amongst Southwesters and the local communities it serves. Visit swgas.com for more.
