NAVY Business

by Kimberly Bailey-Tureaud

The recent capture and killing of Osama bin Laden was met with jubilation by Americans. But when President Obama announced that Navy Seals carried out the mission, it also cast a fresh spotlight on that branch of the military. With the heroes who found the terrorist mastermind unavailable for national security reasons, local Petty Officers Dente Jenkins and Thomas Edward gave Black Image a glimpse of the important work they perform all over the globe.

What are the different branches of the United States Navy?
Jenkins: We have the U.S. Navy Sailors, the Submarines, the Navy Seals, and Sailors on planes and helicopters.

What is the Navy?
Jenkins: We are our own defense and we are seagoing to protect the waters and the United States of America.

What would be the first step if someone wanted to join the Navy?
Jenkins: They can go online and submit their information, which is sent to Tennessee and sent back to the closest local station to the applicant. Also, they can go online to find the closest Navy station and visit the office.

How old do you have to be to enlist in the Navy?
Jenkins: Eighteen years of age.

What does the Navy chant — “Hooyah” — mean?
Jenkins: It is said for encouragement.

Why is the Navy different than the other branches of the armed forces?
Jenkins: I can explain it like this — 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, 80 percent of the world’s population lives near water, then you have 90 percent of international trade that travels by sea. We are there to protect the United States and its interests.

What do Navy SEALS do?
Jenkins: They are a part of the Navy, but they have different missions and sometimes travel by land and sometimes they travel by sea or air.

How is the pay if you are in the Navy?
Jenkins: The pay is actually the same in all military branches. But when you are in the Navy you do more traveling than any other branch in the military. You might go on a six-month deployment and go to seven or eight different countries.

Are you a father?
Jenkins: Yes, I am a father and I have a family.

Do you see an increase in African-Americans enlisting in the Navy?
Jenkins: Yes, I also see an increase of all people inquiring about the Navy. The last … year in the Navy, we had 8,812 African-Americans enroll in the United States.

How long have you been in the Navy and are you a father?
Edward: Yes, I am a father and I also have a family and I have been in the Navy for 15 years.

How long can someone stay in the Navy?
Edward: Usually, 20 years is the average time. If you are at a certain pay grade, you might want to go a little longer.

What are the benefits of being in the Navy?
Edward: Out of all the military branches, we travel the most. That is one of the biggest features. You will also be able to complete your higher education and have full medical benefits.

Do you see many African-American women coming into the Navy?
Edward: Yes.

How would someone reach you to receive more information on the US Navy?
Edward: You can contact me at 702- 258-4707.
Jenkins: And you can contact me at 702-612-1016.

  2. I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
