Battling for their precious son’s life, a selfless Las Vegas couple turns to the black community in a time of need

Shortly after their wedding, Brian and Nicole Hammond moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

Employed at Family Services while pursuing accounting degrees, the young couple decided to take in foster children, which led them to adopt five children.

“One day, while working, I saw a beautiful baby boy and I told my husband about the baby,” Nicole recalled. “After he saw the baby, he immediately told me to sign us up for fostering, because, ‘That baby was our son.’”

There were four babies to follow in their foster-to-adoption journey, which they strongly believe was a mission sent to them by God. Their adopted children range in age from 11 months to 6 years of age.

Their son, Jason, who is now 6, was recently diagnosed with leukemia. He is now undergoing aggressive chemotherapy.

According to Nicole, “The doctors are trying to force my son into remission so that he can receive a bone marrow transplant. There are not a lot of African-Americans registered as bone marrow donors — and I encourage all to please register, because you don’t know who you might help.”
