GOOD ‘TRIP’

Four powerful black actresses star in the comic tale of friends who take a fun journey to New Orleans with outrageous results.

The new comedy “Girls Trip” features something you don’t see very often in Hollywood: four black actresses headlining a major motion picture. Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish are at the center of this story of lifelong friends who travel to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. Sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

The leader of the pack is Lisa (Pinkett Smith, who stars in the Fox series “Gotham,” and recently made headlines for her critique of the new Tupac Shakur biopic), a conservative nurse and mother of two who needs the time off more than anyone else.

Sasha (Latifah, a worldwide, multi-hyphenate, award-winning superstar who reunites here with her “Set It Off” co-star and frequent collaborator) runs a gossip blog, and has reached a point in her career where she’s wondering if her success has been worth it.

Ryan (Hall, beloved for her role in “Scary Movie” and the “Best Man” series, and holder of a master’s degree in journalism) is an author and self-help entrepreneur who is at a crossroads in her marriage to a retired NFL player.

Dina (Haddish, best known for “The Carmichael Show,” “A Christmas Wedding,” and “Hip-Hop Squares,” has an incredible personal story of caring for her mother from a very early age ) is a fiercely loyal, foul-mouthed hothead — the person we all wish we could be, who says whatever comes to her mind.

The movie, which chronicles their zany, sexy New Orleans adventures, arrives in theaters July 21.
