Penny Fuller My personal Black history moment involved my students from Booker Elementary winning the African American Jeopardy Bowl ten times at the West Las Vegas Library. Also, in collaboration with Dr. Lawrence Weekly, the Prime Six Schools — led by Booker Elementary — had the honor of renaming the letter streets in West Las Vegas. That was such a wonderful experience for all the students involved and especially me. I loved doing things like this.
Louie Overstreet I was the first to write a book — “Black on a Background of White” — about Black folks in Alaska, published in 1988.
Michael Elliott I founded the company Veg Ringtone.
Paraz LaFleur I made history by becoming the first woman licensed to preach the gospel at New Revelation Church founded by the late Pastor Donnell Horn. The church had no female ministers for over 17 years. God allowed me to be the first and that led to other women becoming licensed.
Cheria Goodloe I was the first African-American resident commissioner for the SNVRHA Housing Authority. While I served on the board of directors we made a land deal with the county to make sure that a library was built on 28th Street.
Anthony Snowden I attended the Million Man March.
Kennedi Madisen Taylor I am a native of Las Vegas and I sang on the Strip for 20 years, made records and now have my own record label that I am building. I am also an expert in hotel management and development and have trained people in hospitality.
Joseph Simmons My book will be released soon regarding African American voting rights and the Chicago condition.
Gwen Walker I am the founder and president of Nevada’s first African-American or Black History Museum — The Walker African American Museum and Research Center. Also I was the secretary of Nevada Tuskegee Airmen Inc.
Gwen Amie I have been on the Las Vegas Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and fought to make MLK Day a holiday in Nevada.
