Safe passage into adulthood
BY DR. ANNETTE MAYES
As we move toward the traditional prom season, with it comes the need to have what is an often uncomfortable but necessary conversation with young people.
That conversation is about safe sex. Rites of passage like prom are a reminder that our children are at the onset of adulthood. They must understand that this moment comes with a responsibility to protect their health and future.
Nevada, unfortunately, has one of the nation’s highest rates of teen pregnancy. It is crucial that young adults are fully educated on how to take the necessary measures to avoid choices that can derail their life journey.
Being safe — preventing unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases — requires practicing protective methods when engaging in sexual activities. Condoms are a must-have for men and women, particularly those who might be engaging in sex with multiple partners.
If they haven’t already, I encourage parents to have a candid talk with their children about the importance of safe sex; if that conversation has already taken place, a refresher course might be in order before your child goes out to enjoy their prom night.
Las Vegas All Women’s Care prides itself with giving the best OB-GYN health care and medical advice to women and teen girls. My wish for our children is that they have every opportunity in life, but are always mindful of the importance of protecting themselves.
