It’s a New Year! Here’s hoping that we all make resolutions to not only improve our external selves, but also commit to being proactive about our internal health.

Many women are very responsible about getting their yearly OB-GYN physical check-ups, but because of lifestyle (work, children and other commitments) choices, we often neglect our medical well-being.
The month of January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, which comes with a special reminder to “Do You.” Yes, call and make an appointment with your regular OB-GYN, or you can call our offices at Las Vegas All Women’s Care. Each year, 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer; of those, about one-third will die as a result of the cancer. Cervical cancer is highly preventable and treatable because of improved screenings and, if you are eligible, a vaccination for Human Papillomavirus.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the name of a group of viruses that infect the skin. There are more than 100 types of HPV, and it is estimated that 75 percent of women of reproductive age have been infected with one or more types of genital HPV.
Some types of genital HPV may cause genital warts, while other types are linked to abnormal cell changes in the cervix (which can be detected through pap tests) that can lead to cervical cancer.
In the vast majority of cases, the HPV virus causes no symptoms or health problems, and goes away on its own when a
healthy immune system clears the infection. Nevertheless, in about 5 percent of women, the persistent infection occurs with highrisk strains of HPV, which causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.
So, as you toast to the New Year, make a special word to yourself to “do you,” and stay on top of your internal health. Happy New Year and Happy YOU!
Las Vegas All Women’s Care is here to provide excellent prenatal care. For additional information, contact us at (702) 522-9640, or visit the office at 700 Shadow Lane No 165 (1st Floor) in Las Vegas.
