Family Soul owners Daniel and Ramona Chatman

Las Vegas’ Historic Westside has been home to many successful local eateries: places like Hamburger Heaven and Chez Restaurant are legendary. Now there is the new Family Soul Restaurant, specializing in soul food favorites like banana pudding, peach cobbler, collard greens, fried catfish, mac-and-cheese, and more.

Married couple Daniel and Ramona Chatman opened Family Soul on November 9, 2020 — when most businesses were being negatively affected by the COVID pandemic. According to Daniel, “Many people have asked why I would open our restaurant during COVID. My answer is, ‘why not?’ There is no better time than the present. The opportunity for us to open was proposed to us and we went for it.”

Having operated a successful Soul Food Café Express food truck business for 10 years, Daniel always had aspirations to grow the business. “Family Soul restaurant is an extension of my food truck business,” he said. “Ultimately, we knew we wanted to open a restaurant and we knew we had to move into a brick-and-mortar building. This has been a longtime dream of mine and I am happy we did it. We are here to serve the community and the people of Las Vegas. Our restaurant brings great quality and flavorful food to our valley. As the years have gone by working in this business, we have gotten better and better — and maybe one day we will be on the Las Vegas Strip.”

Daniel admits that he is a “grinder,” and is motivated to serve the people of Las Vegas with great food and the best hospitality. “We are a family-owned business and we pride ourselves with treating everyone who enters our restaurant with respect and great customer service. Family Soul is a place where people can come for a good meal and to be around great people from the community.”

According to Ramona, “Family Soul restaurant has a streamlined menu with popular items such as our original Soul Food Wrap that is a combination of greens, yams and fish or chicken. The traditional meals are also available and our fried catfish and fried chicken keeps our customers very happy. Also, everyone needs to try our southern inspired banana pudding — it is so good.”

“Being greeted at the door and making sure the customer is happy and comfortable is how we define hospitality. Family Soul is a throwback to the past soul food restaurants we remember from the Historic Westside. But we are very modern in our approach, and we have catering services offered to big businesses as well. We are here to please the customer. What the customer wants we will try to deliver. We are here to give the entire family an experience they won’t forget at Family Soul.”
