Charles Tureaud and Kimberly Bailey Tureaud have a keen understanding of how raising awareness can help us meet the most pressing challenges. And when it comes to seniors in communities of color, the Las Vegas Black Image publishers have identified a problem that needs solving. “There is a real need to conquer one of the biggest disparities within our communities of color,” they said, “and for our seniors, that disparity centers on healthcare information, education and access.

That’s why they’re teaming up with Intermountain Healthcare and Doolittle Community Senior Center for the Celebrating Seniors and Healthcare event, set for Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. The landmark gathering will give voice to the unheard, as seniors will be given a unique opportunity to interact with healthcare workers, advocates and others dedicated to meeting a critical need in Southern Nevada.

The event will be held at Doolittle Senior Center, located at 1950 North J Street in the Historic Westside community. The Tureauds lauded the senior center’s director, Cassandra Lewis, “for continuing to touch the lives of those in the community with this collaboration.”

More than 100 community seniors are expected to participate in the event, and several will be honored for their contributions to the life of our city.

“I have worked at the Doolittle Senior Center for the last 10 years — and it has been the best 10 years of my career,” said Lewis. “Being able to honor those who are well deserving is a privilege. I am excited and looking forward to celebrating our seniors.”
