Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Las Vegas City Councilman Cedric Crear, Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II and other officials recently dedicated the new $3.2 million Historic Westside Legacy Park located at 1600 Mount Mariah Drive in the Historic Westside.
The park is a partnership between the City of Las Vegas and Clark County, and is a tribute to the many trailblazers who have led the Historic Westside through the years. The park incorporates unique elements — including the stories of 36 leaders chosen by a community panel.
According to Mayor Goodman, “The Historic Westside Legacy Park is truly beautiful and brings the history of West Las Vegas to the forefront. Legacy Park will serve the community as an inviting gathering place and also a place of education where the residents and founders of the Historic Westside are being recognized.”
She continues, “The city and Clark County worked together to make this park a reality and it is my honor to help recognize and celebrate the great community leaders who are celebrated in the park for 2021. They include: William “Bob” and Anna Bailey; Ruby Duncan; Huedillard “H.P.” Fitzgerald; James “Jimmy” Gay; Theron and Naomi Goynes; Charles Keller; Sarann Knight-Preddy; Dr. Esther Langston; Dr. James McMillan; Daisy Miller; Det. Herman Moody; Sen. Joe Neal; Commissioner William U. and Maggie Pearson; Louis and Vicki Richardson; Jessie Scott; Dr. William W. Sullivan; Helen Toland; Dr. Charles I. West; Brenda and Monroe Williams; and Woodrow Wilson.
Nominations are open now for additional honorees to be added to the park, and the public is invited to submit their selections online. The 2022 honorees are scheduled to be announced at the annual African American Trailblazer Awards at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Las Vegas City Hall, located at 495 S. Main Street, in the second-floor Council Chambers.
