Preventing ‘summer slide’ for kids

“Every summer, we use the power of our 25 branches, across urban and rural Clark County, to bring the Summer Challenge program to life for area children, ages Birth through Grade 12,” said Kelvin Watson, executive director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. “We make it easy for parents to keep their kids active and engaged with fun summer learning activities, while practicing the reading, science, art, math, and critical thinking skills they are learning in school. Even babies and toddlers benefit from this program, having fun with their parents and caregivers.”

NEW! Adult Summer Challenge

“Adults have been asking us for their own Summer Challenge program and we are introducing this for the first time,” Watson said. “Adults can discover the Library District’s art galleries, enjoy theater performances, engage in writing, drawing, language, and craft classes, or explore a new interest or hobby. With 3.3 million items in our collection, and hundreds of free, entertaining, live performances, adults of any age will surely find something new and fascinating to enjoy this summer.”

NEW! Coloring & Art Contest for All Ages

“Also new this year is the Library District’s first Coloring & Art Contest,” Watson said. “We invite you to draw and color or paint your own original image from a book that you read, and enter it to win a $25 art supplies gift card from your local branch.” Watson explained that participants can pick up an entry form at any Library District branch or download and print the form at LVCCLD.org/SummerChallenge. (Coloring Contest not required for Summer Challenge participation.)

Here’s How Summer Challenge Works

1) Participants should pick up a Summer Challenge reading & activities log at any branch to track their reading and activities progress. OR they can track their progress online at https://lvccld.beanstack.org/.

2) Then start exploring and experiencing! Participants can visit their local branch, or go to LVCCLD.org/SummerChallenge, to find age-group curated lists of events and activities, reading recommendations, downloadable books, and audiobooks to fill up their log.

3) Complete all three levels on your Summer Challenge log. Kids and teens who complete the challenge will get a coupon for a Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza, earn a book, while supplies last and be entered into a branch prize drawing for $50. Adults who complete the challenge will get a coupon for 30% off from Pizza Hut and a solar-powered device charger, while supplies last.

More chances to win: kids and teens who complete all three levels and the Super Reader Challenge will be entered for a chance to win a grand prize consisting of: an Apple iPad Mini; a Vegas Golden Knights or Las Vegas Lights FC Official Jersey; a Vegas Golden Knights “Chance” Plush Toy; a Las Vegas Lights FC Anytime Ticket Book; a Las Vegas Lights FC Scarf; and tickets to Cowabunga Bay.
