Mother of all editions

Charles Tureaud and Kimberly Bailey Tureaud

We love this time of year, when Americans pause to honor and give thanks to God’s greatest gift: our mothers. We offer wishes for a very happy Mother’s Day — and please know that we sincerely appreciate everything you do for families, communities, and humanity.

In that spirit, this month’s cover story reflects on the final interview that Oprah Winfrey conducted with her “mother-mentor” — Dr. Maya Angelou, whose timeless words of wisdom ring throughout the ages.

The celebration of motherhood continues in this issue with a visual presentation of mothers and families in Southern Nevada. We have to admit: it was painful to choose a relatively small collection from more than 150 submissions received for this pictorial, and we’re overwhelmed with gratitude for all who shared their precious memories with us.

Also in this issue:

A new edition of “Silent Corner,” our feature centered on revealing testimony from survivors of mental illness and its repercussions. We thank all who are courageous enough to share their stories, which help others cope with an issue that does not receive enough attention in the African-American community.

Our review of Usher’s “My Way” residency at the Park MGM Arena, along with exclusive photos of the R&B superstar at work where he seems most at home: onstage.

Recognizing Lupus Awareness Month with Dr. Annette Mayes, who shares her perspective on helping women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant while living with lupus.

Cox Communications is making a difference with scholarships to help young people pursue their dreams of higher education, while the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is giving adults a new opportunity to reshape their lives and earn high school diplomas.
