What do you say to our young Black men about staying safe?
Valerie Lucas
I tell our young men to watch their friends and what’s in their backpacks.Ricca Grace-McCarrell
I would like our community men to not live in fear, but to always be vigilant and keep a proper balance of the two. At the end of the day, coming home safe is most important. Nothing else matters in comparison.Jackee Cahee
I would like to encourage our sons to stay safe, but keep doing you and be successful.Harvey Scott Jr. Everything requires a threat assessment — situational awareness. Gwen Walker
I like to remind our young men that they want to come home. So, if we are referring to safety from bad policing, I suggest:
● Don’t challenge them or argue with them
● When they approach your car, turn your live Facebook on or call an adult to listen and record
● Don’t make sudden moves
● Keep your hands visible & on the steering wheel
● If you’re indulging, don’t get behind the wheel. Have a designated driver
● If they violate your rights, man handle you—let them. Do what they say. Remember: we will handle it once you’re safe
● If it’s your homies, distance yourself from the bad ones, and get a job so you won’t get caught upRickey Ormond
I would tell our sons to keep being proud of your race, but be smart.April Washington
I would like our young men to be safe, because they will always believe them.
