Welcome to Black History Month
BY CRAIG KNIGHT
Greetings Las Vegas community, worldwide listeners, and supporters!
This is the first edition of my new column for Las Vegas Black Image Magazine — and first and foremost, shout out to Kimberly Bailey-Tureaud for the idea to give me a monthly space to share my thoughts, opinions, experiences, and upcoming notable events as general manager for the legendary KCEP Power 88.1 FM.
Welcome to Black History Month! This is a special time to reflect on our culture and contributions to American history! Yes, Black history is American history and should be celebrated 365 days a year! (In this case, it’s 366, because 2024 is a leap year. Tip: every presidential election year and Summer Olympics happens during a leap year … Now back to our program.)
If you haven’t noticed, KCEP Power 88.1 FM airs a Black History Fact every day of the year! (Shout out to Mr. Melvin Stringer for researching and voicing the Black History Facts!) These facts elevate your mind and sense of pride for being Black, African American, Afro American, Negro — whichever you identify with. At the end of the day, it’s our culture we need to explore — so that we can educate ourselves and others with it.
That said, I’m proud to announce that KCEP, a Heritage Radio Station on the Historic Westside of Las Vegas, is celebrating more than a half-century of broadcasting and community service — and will be premiering a 50-year history documentary during the last week of Black History Month!
Please tune into KCEP Power 88.1 FM for more details, or go to the app store on your device, search Power 88 Las Vegas, download The Power 88 app on your device, and listen live — any time and anywhere! You can also follow us on Facebook @Power88Vegas, or @NewVegasPower88 on Instagram, or log onto Power88LV.com and see what’s going on!
Have a happy Black History Month! Please educate yourself and share with someone — especially someone from another culture. Why? Because before we are anything, we are human beings first, and that’s what makes us one. “We Are One” … The People’s Station!
