Wow, it’s already May! Mayday, mayday: 2024 is moving too fast and turning out to be very hectic!

April showers bring May flowers, and kicking it off is Cinco de Mayo — a yearly celebration held on May 5 to commemorate Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Celebrations include parades, music, folkloric dancing, battle reenactments and foods like molé poblano, chilaquiles, tamales, carnitas, barbacoa, fish tacos, horchata, eloté, and more.

Mother’s Day is May 12 — a day to recognize mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as their positive contributions to families and society. A day to celebrate and show your appreciation for the role they played in your life. A day to cherish grandmothers, aunts, role models, and mentors who are like mothers to you. A day to remember mothers who are no longer with us.

Graduations are aMAYzing to attend, as we see young people transition to the next level of education — whether it’s from kindergarten to elementary, all the way up to postgraduate education. May can be looked at as a month of completion! Congratulations to all graduating classes of 2024. YOU DID IT!

May sports! The NHL playoffs continue to become more competitive in each round. “GO KNIGHTS GO! And in the NBA, which is experiencing a changing of the guard, these younger athletes are giving the veterans a run for the championship. Thrilling!

Meanwhile, the WNBA season opener is highly anticipated, with the Las Vegas Aces attempting to “threepeat” as WNBA champions. A-C-E-S! I believe this will be the best season of women’s basketball yet!

Memorial Day honors America’s military men and women who lost their lives in service to our country. The holiday is observed on the last Monday of May, this year on May 27. Thank you to all who serve, and have served in the military!

May is a busy health awareness month, with recognition set aside for mental health, ALS, arthritis, and bladder cancer, just to name a few.

As we celebrate our mothers, military heroes, graduates, and sports culture, let’s remember to do it responsibly! Until next time: educate yourself and share the knowledge with others! God bless you!
