Enthusiasm and anticipation are at a fever pitch right now, so pardon the freely joyous exercise of language and editorial license here — but if there has ever been a “herstoric” edition of Las Vegas Black Image, this is the one.
Kamala Harris is on the verge of becoming the first Black woman elected president of the United States, and the photo essay heralded by our cover captures the intensity and excitement surrounding the race for the Oval Office.
And that excitement is Black-hot here in Las Vegas, a cultural, demographic, economic, and political nerve center in the swing state of Nevada — where there is a fierce fight over every vote, and African-American men have emerged as do-or-die constituency.
There is a drumbeat of understanding that this election is critical to whether America moves forward or backward. United we vote — and engagement is essential. That’s why we’re covering so many bases inside this packed issue:
- Our community of readers weighs in on the racial implications of a central, polarizing issue in the campaign: immigration
- Ellen Brown confronts election stress and shares strategies for taking refuge from the outrage spin cycle
- Louie Overstreet looks ahead to the post-election period, and wonders when Americans will recover five essential senses of basic, good citizenship: personal responsibility, commitment, charity, reciprocity, and solidarity
- Mayoral candidate Shelley Berkley on the value of loyal leadership in Las Vegas
- Former president Bill Clinton stops by the MLK Senior Center to talk up the importance of early voting
There is something for everyone in these pages — and that will always be thanks to our outstanding advertisers, who have an unwavering commitment to empowering the Black community of Southern Nevada.
Rise,
Charles Tureaud & Kimberly Bailey Tureaud
