January ushers in a new year. It is also a time to recognize Birth Defects Awareness Month.
Black women are more likely than white women to experience certain pregnancy complications and birth risk factors, including:
- Preterm birth: Birth before 37 weeks gestation.
- Low birth weight: Birth weight of less than 5.5 pounds.
- Late or no prenatal care: Starting prenatal care in the third trimester or not receiving any prenatal care at all.
- Life-threatening conditions: preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, and blood clots.
Other factors that might be the result of one’s socioeconomic status, and can increase the risk of birth defects, include:
- Certain health conditions, like preexisting diabetes.
- Certain medicines before or during pregnancy, such as isotretinoin.
- Smoking, drinking alcohol, or using street drugs during pregnancy.
Every 4.5 minutes a baby is born with a condition that affects the structure or function of his or her body. Collectively, these conditions are referred to as birth defects. They can vary widely in how and where they affect the body and include things from cleft lip to heart problems. While medical advancements have greatly improved health and survival, many of these conditions require lifelong care.
Achieving the best possible health will look different for everyone. No two people living with these conditions are exactly alike. Everyone’s journey is unique — shaped by their specific condition, individual strengths, and support system.
