KNIGHT MOVES | Vegas Moment, August Presentation

By Craig Knight

It’s August, and in Las Vegas, this is not the month for the faint of heart — literally. With average daytime temperatures regularly soaring well above 100°F, surviving the summer requires preparation, hydration, and common sense.

August marks the tail end of summer, as tourists flock to the city for pool parties, world-class entertainment, and last-minute vacations before the school year begins. Despite the sweltering heat, Las Vegas continues to make room for cultural reflection and community awareness.

Nationally, August is recognized as Black Business Month, and in a city with a growing and thriving Black entrepreneurial community, it serves as an opportunity to celebrate and support Black-owned restaurants, retailers, service providers, and other local businesses that contribute to our economy and culture.

August is also National Wellness Month, encouraging us to prioritize self-care. In a city often associated with indulgence and nonstop excitement, this observance offers a refreshing reminder to slow down, stay hydrated, enjoy wellness activities such as yoga or fitness classes, visit a spa, or simply take time to recharge amid the desert heat.

Historically, August also reminds us of Las Vegas’ remarkable journey. Founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911, the city experienced tremendous growth during the 1930s with the construction of Hoover Dam. By the mid-20th century, Las Vegas had become a world-renowned entertainment destination, welcoming legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Elvis Presley, and countless others who helped establish the Strip’s global reputation.

And for sports fans, August means one thing: NFL preseason football is back! It’s the start of another exciting season, bringing renewed hope and anticipation for fans across the country. It should be another fun and memorable year.

As we welcome August — with its rich history, meaningful observances, community celebrations, intense summer heat, and opportunities to relax and reconnect — let’s enjoy everything the month has to offer while doing so responsibly and safely.

Until the next edition of Knight Moves, continue to educate yourself and share that knowledge with others.

God bless you!
