West Prep Academy celebrates historic growth.

It was a celebration unlike any other, as the community came out for a recent celebration at the Preparatory Institute School for Academic Excellence at Charles I. West Hall — or West Prep for short. The reason for the gathering: the school’s extraordinary academic achievements and redevelopment that has delivered an impressive campus expansion.

Named after Nevada’s first black medical doctor, Dr. Charles I. West, West Prep delighted attendees with a performance by the school choir, as well as video presentations featuring the school’s accomplishments and high standards for excellence and integrity.

Dr. Charles I. West’s granddaughters, Dottie West and Jessica West, thanked the school staff and the community for supporting the school named for their grandfather.

“Papa Charles believed in education first,” said Dottie West. “If he was alive today, he would be very proud to walk the halls and encourage the students.”
