What is your 2023 prediction for the economic health of Black people in Southern Nevada?
Marsha Kimble-Simms The removal of criminalization of minor traffic offenses. This removes warrants from being issued and stops the suspension of driver’s licenses when fines aren’t paid. This will allow many people to enter the job market and be gainfully employed.
Paul Mark Maclin All families should start a business. All my daughters and sons have their own businesses. I didn’t shower them with material things. I showed them long work hours and put food on the table. I was at every soccer game, birthdays, and school events. Building the financial and spiritual core of your home is a must.
Joseph Anuda Bryant When Black folks begin to move their investment portfolios to Africa and not to white owned neighborhoods, then we will see significant change. The entire world is moving their investments to Africa. But Black Americans haven’t. This is going to set us behind another 100 years if we don’t get involved. White Americans are ahead because they invest abroad and build at home. We have to do the same because it’s about access to resources and it’s easier done than people understand.
Dvegas North My challenge to all of us in the community is to consciously spend your money with Black-owned businesses and encourage others to do so. I have already started doing this by gathering as many people as I can and blessing those business owners with our money and good vibes. I would like to see others doing the same.
Jackee Cahee I would like to see more people start their own businesses. Create more jobs and I believe our economy in Southern Nevada will be better.
Bishop George L. White Sr. We will never possess what we don’t pursue. We must be a people of action.
April Washington Supporting our own Black-owned businesses by recycling our dollars in our own community.
Stephen Munford I look at other ethnic groups in Southern Nevada, such as: the Asian population, East Indians, and Latinos — in comparison, we have no unity and unified agenda. Other ethnic groups have a strong unified front. Malcolm X once spoke about Black America controlling the economics, social and political agenda of our communities. And then topping it off with reconnecting with our families and relatives on the African continent. None of this has happened successfully. With $7 trillion generated by black consumers, over 30 million Black Americans, thousands of Black politicians, many Black millionaires and billionaires, national media outlets with Black correspondents — and there is still no REAL economic coming together. Our own divisions and biases keep us from becoming a true power for ourselves.
Rickey Mickey Ormond My prediction is that nothing is going to change. The leadership we have doesn’t fight for the needed economics for us.
