History in the making

Charles Tureaud and Kimberly Bailey Tureaud

Las Vegas Black Image Magazine celebrates Black history every day of the year, but we also wish to share the best of the best in Black history in our magazine. This month we are excited to share legendary lensman Clinton Wright’s story as the official photographer of the Black community from the early 1960s until the late 1980s.

We hope you enjoy the many historic photos of Mr. Wright’s as well as some from our own collection capturing Black Las Vegas in the 1950s and 1960s.

A special thank you for all who participated in Community Speaks and shared their own contributions to Las Vegas’ Black history.

Thank you to our executive publishing team. This magazine could not do what it does without their expertise.

Our contributing writers — Louie Overstreet, Dr. Ellen Brown, Dr. Claytee White, and Dr. Annette Mayes — are the heartbeats that keeps Las Vegas Black Image alive. We appreciate them and the other writers who lend their pens to us every month.

Another special thank you goes out to photographer Clark McCarrell Jr. — who perfectly captured the annual Las Vegas MLK Parade. His beautiful photos take you inside the experience of this year’s parade. And with that, a special shout-out to the fabulous MLK Committee on another job well done.

We also thank ABC for including Las Vegas in its “Soul of the Nation” broadcast — which will feature Anna Bailey, our mother and mother-in-law. This special airs February 1 on the network.

Enjoy Black History Month, and remember: our ancestors want us to continue progressing and making a positive way for the next generation.
