The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team at Southwest Gas strives to develop a workplace culture that gives everyone a sense of belonging, celebrates differences, and demonstrates the company’s commitment to fostering a diverse workplace.

One tool that brings together employees to increase awareness and acceptance of diverse cultures is Southwest Gas’ Employee Resource Groups (ERG).

Elevate is an ERG for African-Americans and allies that is intended to create a fully inclusive environment that attracts, develops, and empowers talented individuals. The company has launched a series of quarterly professional and personal development sessions called “Elevated Conversations.” This series offers insight into important topics such as “The Power of Trust, Grace, and Professional Bravery” and “Being Your Authentic Self.”

“The heartbeat of Elevate is collective growth and community,” says Tiffani Walker, chair of Southwest Gas’ Elevate Employee Resource Group. “Although Elevate is the ERG for African Americans, we feel strongly about including allies because we understand the importance of fostering a diverse community.”

Elevate goes beyond providing opportunities in the workplace. The ERG also focuses on helping the Southwest Gas African American community and allies with mental health and wellness with an abundance of resources. There are counseling programs, coaching sessions, and well-being seminars to improve an employee’s work-life balance.

Walker adds, “I love being a part of a leadership team that shares the passion for cultivating a community that seeks to build relationships, promote education, have inspiring life conversations, and support the overall growth of African Americans and allies at Southwest Gas. I can walk in purpose and build upon a vision that will hopefully remain long after my time at the company.”

Southwest Gas has been recognized by Forbes as one of “America’s Best-In-State Employers 2022” because of programs like Elevate. More information is available at swgas.com/careers.
