LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS: Reflecting on the true gifts of the holiday season

Charles Tureaud and Kimberly Bailey Tureaud

We wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy Kwanzaa!

In our hearts, you are the gift to celebrate as we reflect on 15 years of Las Vegas Black Image. Our gift to you: the extraordinary work of our outstanding team of contributing writers, editors and visual artists — who continue raising the bar for Black publishing excellence.

This December issue is very special — as we remember one of our most legendary businessmen, Mr. Sammie Ross Armstrong. Through the eyes of Ms. Brenda Williams, one of our greatest community leaders, we share some of the best memories of Mr. Armstrong — a man of true integrity and passion for uplifting Black Las Vegas. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Also inside:

  • As Donny Hathaway plays in the background, Community Speaks asks readers how they’ll celebrate differently “This Christmas”
  • We put a spotlight on R&B superstar Usher and the mission of his New Look nonprofit organization, which uplifts our young people with scholarships and recognition; Las Vegas native Sandra Douglas Morgan, whose extraordinary work as president of the Raiders has cemented her place as a distinguished woman in our community; and Congressman Steven Horsford, the force behind a progressive agenda for African-American communities as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus
  • Much gratitude to Southwest Gas for including Black Image at the PBR Bull Riders Competition, a truly wonderful event that brings people from all over the country to our Silver State.
  • Check out our listing of outstanding holiday activities and concerts going on at our Las Vegas Clark County Libraries for all to enjoy.
  • Dr. Marguerite Brathwaite of Innovative Women’s Care keeps us informed on how HIV/AIDS is affecting Black women

Finally, we’d like to end 2023 with a huge thank-you to all of our advertisers, supporters, and loyal readers. Let’s go into the new year together — so please reach out to us with story ideas for 2024!

Rise,
