This October edition of Las Vegas Black Image brings us into fall — and we greet the season with the indomitable Sherri Shepherd, whose success embodies how Black women have come to dominate daytime talk.
Autumn means more than easing temperatures in our fair city — it’s also time for Las Vegas Caravan for Mammogram, set for Oct. 26. This eighth annual event marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and is a reminder for women (and men, too; this month’s edition features the story of Albert Herbert, himself a breast cancer survivor) to take proactive care of their health. With music by DJ Kam and lunch by Simply Pure, it’s sure to be an unforgettable time for the entire community. There’s still time to register: call (702) 615-8216 today for your entry form.
Elsewhere in this issue:
• Paying tribute to three Black cultural icons who recently left us: Frankie Beverly, James Earl Jones and Tito Jackson. We honor them and their impact on our lives.
• Community Speaks on the state of affordable housing in Las Vegas, and we see each other in Photos of the Month.
• Shelley Berkley pushes forward in her quest to become our next mayor.
We are filled with gratitude for our dedicated advertisers, who ensure that our community continues to have a voice in its own image. And we thank our executive publishing team for its relentless dedication to bringing you — the loyal reader — the best each month, and the contributing writers whose insights and perspectives have the power to touch and transform lives.
Finally: If we are united, there is nothing beyond our grasp — so make it a point to register to vote. Our freedom depends on your active participation in our precious democracy.
Rise,
Charles Tureaud & Kimberly Bailey Tureaud
