Have you thought about how much — or how little — power you possess? Not just the power to get whatever you want, whenever you want — but power that manifests when needed to make important things happen.

Another question: how often have you heard friends and others talk about disturbing situations and consistently refer to “they,” an amorphous entity with responsibility to solve problems? In an election year, there is an existential quality to the question, “Who are they?” It matters, because there are decisions to make — and many are expressing feelings of indecision that lead to non-participation.

Others are waiting for … I don’t know what. Regardless, the voting process is in place now and Election Day is going to come and go. Unleash the power you have as a registered voter.

It’s important to realize that when it comes to action or communication, there is no mysterious “They” ready to jump in. Instead, it’s “I,” “Us,” “We,” and “Me?” — individuals using personal power. When “I” and “Me” engage with others through requests, invitations, questions, or answers, we can create a compelling energy that captures attention. This leads to a shared interest or common goal, forming a “WE” that overwhelms the distant and undefined “They.”

Let’s say you are eager to form an interest group of like-minded individuals to bring about a change in your neighborhood, workplace, or organization. You find a few others who agree, and after a short time, things start to come together for you! Your group is now the “We” who come together to work toward engaging others to listen to your story. They will then present their own thoughts for consideration. The interest in change soon expanded to include sharing, listening, and encouragement to move forward. New ideas emerge for contemplation, and input from extensive discussions outside the group adds to the stimulation. Your initial personal power has blossomed into a possibility which stimulated interest that has manifested thought and is ready for action! Personal power got the idea going and collective power created the force to move the idea toward action!

Keep in mind this is a process, not a one-person activity. Power requires at least three elements: an idea or need, a target audience, and people with resources willing to contribute to create the intended outcome.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice coined this phrase: “Power is nothing unless you can turn it into influence.” So whether you continue through life’s everyday encounters, or struggle your way to the top of the mountain, keep in mind that it is your power that will get you to your destination. “They” and “Them” won’t always be willing or able to listen to your story. Create a compelling message, and watch it turn into what you need and want it to be.
