Expecting a baby? You may be wondering whether your bundle of joy will have mommy’s eyes or daddy’s dimples — but they will inherit much more than that.

Learning about parents’ health history can help give your child the best possible start. It is important to know whether your baby is more likely to have birth defects — because it can be addressed early. Your healthcare provider may recommend genetic counseling, genetic testing, or other tests based on your or your partner’s family health history. Women who are pregnant (or thinking about having a baby) may want to look at family history of birth defects, developmental disabilities, or newborn screening disorders.

Knowing your family health history before you get pregnant can give you time to address any concerns. Reasons for genetic counseling are based on your family health history, your healthcare provider might refer you for genetic counseling. Other reasons for genetic counseling include having had:

  • Infertility (trouble getting pregnant)
  • Two or more miscarriages.
  • A previous pregnancy or child with a genetic condition or birth defect.
  • Given birth to a baby who died at less than 1 year of age.

And remember: it is important to consider the family history of both potential parents — not just the mother. Be sure to discuss any health concerns with your healthcare provider. Testing before you get pregnant can give you time to consider what the results mean for you. In some cases, they might impact your pregnancy planning,
