Will America ever return to its senses?

Since this column was due before the presidential election results are in, I will have to wait to share my take on the outcome.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, regardless of who will be our next president, by necessity, it will be our civic duty to restore America to its five senses. No, I ain’t talking about taste, smell, touch, hearing, and sight.

I am talking about the five senses of personal responsibility, commitment, charity, reciprocity, and solidarity — all of which now suffer from atrophy due to a lack of exercise on the part of America’s citizenry.

For too long, we have stood by and let power-hungry politicians unmercifully debase persons of color, religions, and gender identification while not accepting the personal responsibility to do something about the insanity taking hold in our body politic.

We are no longer willing to march into Hell for a heavenly cause due to a total lack of commitment on our parts.

When is the last time you or even someone you know demonstrate a sense of kindness or charity?

What happened to the old-time practice of please scratch my back in time of need and I will scratch yours when the need arises as a neighborly act of reciprocity?

I dread to think of how WWII would have turned out, if the lack of American solidarity we are suffering from today, existed back then.

Since our nation is missing all its senses, can there be any wonder why there exists so much strife at home and so many other nations no longer envy our currently failing democracy?

Election results of the local, state, and national races will determine whether we can keep hope alive in America.

I am of the opinion, we as a nation can’t consume another drop of the witches’ brew of disparities in wealth, hate, division, phobias, and all kinds of isms, and remain sober enough to heal what ails us to remain the United States of America.

What say you?
