Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter meets with lawmakers to advocate for social change.
For 112 years, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a historically African-American female nonprofit organization, has been dedicated to scholarship, sisterhood, and service. With 350,000 members and 1,000 chapters worldwide, the sorority continues to make an impact on communities globally.
The Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter (LVAC), founded over 60 years ago by 12 charter members, is the second largest chapter in the far west region. With 250 active local members, LVAC serves the Las Vegas community by providing countless hours of service, compelling programming, and effective collaborations with local organizations to offer thousands of scholarships each year. The diligent, dedicated, and talented members continue to raise the bar each year by producing top quality, award-winning programming in alignment with Delta’s National Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.
Members of the Social Action Committee of the Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted “Delta Days at the Nevada State Capitol” on February 10. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a non-partisan organization, and this event aims to engage with state legislators, government officials, and staff to build relationships and share priorities, community information, and resources for social action. Twenty-five members participated in the advocacy activities, led by Chapter President Dr. Rebecca Rogers and Delta Day Chairs Dr. Tya Mathis-Coleman and Ms. Ashley Floyd.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a reputable international public service organization with a critical focus on programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening the African American family. Social action for
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. means leveraging the collective voice of our membership for advocacy, education, and community initiatives aimed at driving social change. This includes activities such as legislative advocacy, voter education and registration, and addressing pressing public policy issues to improve the lives of marginalized communities.
Notable Nevada Deltas include Judge Johnnie Rawlinson, Dr. Linda Young, North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, and school namesakes Eva G. Simmons, Dr. Beverly S. Mathis, and Helen Toland. On the national stage, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. proudly counts among its members former HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
