Each and every month, for seventeen wonderful years, Las Vegas Black Image has been designed to take you on a journey made possible by our outstanding roster of contributors, amazing advertisers, and loyal readers. This May issue is centered on the one who makes us want to return home: Mom.
Our special edition of Community Speaks is devoted to readers sharing their thoughts on Mother’s Day, including tender photos of the women who gave them life.
Elsewhere in these pages:
• The cover story looks at the burgeoning career of talented comedian, actress, and producer Michelle Buteau — who is bringing the fire with the hit Netflix series “Survival of the Thickest,” and the comedy special, “A Buteau-Ful Mind,” taped at Radio City Music Hall.
• We cast a spotlight on Edward “Coach Spud” Johnson and his 34 years as head coach of the Vegas Stealth Youth Track Club — one of the first organizations of its kind within the Historic Westside community that afforded many children the opportunity to travel, receive full-ride scholarships, and become Junior Olympic Gold Medal winners.
• Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month with an informative essay by Dinisha Mingo of Solutions of Change — who argues persuasively about the need to provide better support for young people.
There’s so much more — so let’s turn the page and continue this beautiful journey through Black excellence. Prayers and blessings to all.
Rise,
