Wow, it’s May already! Mayday, mayday — 2025 is moving very fast and turning out to be very hectic!

Kicking it off is Cinco de Mayo, a yearly celebration held on May 5 to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Mother’s Day, on May 11, is a day to recognize mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general — as well as their positive contributions to families and society. A day to celebrate and show your appreciation for the role they played in your life. A day to cherish grandmothers, aunts, role models, mentors, and a day to remember the mothers who are no longer with us.

Graduation ceremonies are a-MAY-zing to attend, seeing young people transition to the next level of education whether it’s from kindergarten to elementary, middle school to high school, to college or trade, to graduate-level education, or to life itself. These are incredible moments! May can be looked at as a month of completion! Congratulations to all graduating classes of 2025: you did it!

May sports! The playoffs continue to become more competitive in each round of the NHL (“GO KNIGHTS GO!”) and NBA postseasons — the latter of which has been a changing of the guard in my humble opinion. These younger athletes are giving the veterans a run for the NBA championship. Thrilling!

The WNBA season opener is one of the most anticipated events of the year! The revamped Las Vegas Aces squad is locked in and ready to bring the title back home. LET’S GO A-C-E-S!

Fans are also buzzing about the debut of the league’s newest franchise, the Golden State Valkyries. The team features former Aces standout (and Iowa teammate of Caitlin Clark), Kate Martin! And if you’re wondering what a Valkyrie is (I had to look it up, too), it’s one of the maidens of Odin who chooses which warriors fall in battle and escorts them to Valhalla. Interesting, right?

On top of that, all eyes are on this year’s incredibly talented draft class. With so much new talent and energy in the league, this is shaping up to be one of the best WNBA seasons ever!

Memorial Day honors America’s military men and women who lost their lives in service to our country. The holiday will be observed on May 26. Thank you to all who serve, and have served in the U.S. military — you are appreciated!

Lastly, May is an awareness month for Mental Health, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; the most common form of motor neuron disease) Arthritis, and Bladder Cancer — just to name a few.

As we celebrate our mothers, military heroes, graduates, and sports — let’s remember to do it responsibly!

Until the next edition of Knight Moves, educate yourself and share the knowledge with others!

God bless you!
