“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have eternal life.” — John 8:12
In 1971, a young man already accomplished in music and songcraft released a hit that shot to the top of the charts — and spoke directly to the moment the country was living through.
There was a war going on. People who had stepped forward for the United States were fighting overseas, and thousands of soldiers on both sides were not coming home alive. That young man was Marvin Gaye.
Deeply affected by the war in Vietnam, police brutality, and personal loss, Gaye felt compelled to tell the story from his own point of view and bring it to the forefront. “What’s Going On” was his plea for peace, love, and understanding.
Fast-forward to 2026.
The light at the end of the tunnel
Yes, it is there. Light appears on its own cycle. Even in dark moments, direction is possible — and light, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder.
I think of it in small ways. A kind word. A small gesture. It is in these tiny moments of an ordinary day that we remember what matters.
We see it in others, too:
Patience — this light shows up when we sit and truly listen.
Presence — the light we carry forward through our own small acts. How do you carry yours?
It is listening without rushing. Passing on patience. Choosing kindness, offering grace, sharing love.
Your light is right there. It is not hidden. Don’t hold it under a bushel — let it do what it does, and that is to shine.
We all traverse our own journeys. They may be winding. They may be quiet.
But they are ours alone to walk.
The light is yours to find.
