A bond like no other

For Mother’s Day, Las Vegas moms and daughters pay tribute to one another.

The Baileys will receive the prestigious honor, along with a cap and gown, at the UNLV commencement ceremonies scheduled for May 19. Ten days earlier, there will be a preliminary celebration luncheon honoring the Baileys and other Nevada trailblazers.

Airing April 7, the 13th annual BET Celebration of Gospel will feature performances by Donnie McClurkin, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Israel Houghton, Tye Tribbett, Anthony Brown, Tamela Mann and hosted by comedian and talk show host Steve Harvey. To many, the headliner will be Grammy winner Yolanda Adams, who spoke exclusively with Las Vegas Black Image Magazine about life and finding true happiness.

Long before they arrived in America on slave ships, many Africans practiced their own form of Christianity, which mixed their newer beliefs with ancient customs. During slavery, African captives worshiped secretly in what were called “hush harbors” — underground gathering places where their spirituality could not be detected by slave owners.

As Las Vegas’ first integrated hotel and casino property, the historic Moulin Rouge instantly became an integral part of Nevada history when it opened in 1955. As quickly as it captured the imagination of people across the United States, however, it also became a source of great mystery when it closed, unceremoniously, after just six months in operation. One of the people who was there from the beginning was Ruby Amie-Pilot, who worked in the Deauville Room coffee shop on the property. She recently sat down with Las Vegas Black Image to share her memories.

As Las Vegas works to achieve economic recovery by attracting new businesses to the valley, one of the most persistent roadblocks has been the school system’s struggle to reclaim excellence in education. Among those leading the charge on that front is Clark County School Board Trustee Dr. Linda E. Young, who made Nevada history in 2012 as the first African-American to serve as president of the School Board that oversees Las Vegas schools.
